I haven't participated in International Zine month since 2013, when I made the very first issue of Lady Teeth for the 24 Hour Zine Challenge! Since then I put out seven more issues of my zine (which blows my mind). It's time to take part in IZM again!
07.01.16 - Make a Top 10 list of reasons why you love zines!
07.02.16 - Re-read your favorite zines. My favorites include Doris, Truckface & You Don't Get There From Here so those are the ones I re-read today. I linked all of them to where you can get copies, in case you've never read them. All are highly recommended!
07.03.16 - Organize your zine collection. I just did this a couple weeks ago so I could move it to a larger bookcase. I loved the way twenty years worth of zines looked stacked in the middle of my room.
07.04.16 - Read a zine from a country other than your own. This was a good opportunity to revisit my friend Laura's zine, Pansy! If you've never read Pansy it's a perzine that is super heavy & touches on topics including addiction, eating disorders & mental health. It's intense & highly recommended.
07.05.16 - Zine Distro Appreciation Day. Order from a zine distro. Today I ordered a bunch of back issues of Basic Paper Airplane by Joshua James Amberson of Antiquated Future, a Portland based zine distro (& tape label, pop-up shop & more) that's been around since 2008!
07.06.16 - Add your zine to or update your zinewiki.com. There was already a page for me & Girl Swirl & Sub Rosa so I finally added a page for Lady Teeth! But please feel free to edit them as you see fit (especially the Girl Swirl page because it's listed as a stub, whatever that means).
07.07.16 - Make some envelopes or postcards for postal week. I sorta cheated on this one & just took a few extra minutes to decorate the packages I was sending out today to my friend Jonas & Marlee
07.08.16 - Make a flier for your zine to send out with trades!
07.09.16 - Write a letter to a zinester you don't know. This one is so awesome because it really reminds me of why we do this whole thing. I continue to make zines because folks reach out to me & tell me how they could relate to my writing. It can be weird to write to a stranger but trust me, as long as you're not a total creep about it, they will be so psyched. So, I wrote to a few new folks. Hopefully they write me back! If you want to write to me, please do! po box 542 hilltown pa 18927
07.10.16 - Send a care package to a zine friend. I'm working on a little something for a friend who is going through a rough time. I don't even consider her a zine friend anymore, just a friend friend who makes zines!
07.11.16 - Make some mail art! The closest I get to mail art is just decorating envelopes. But it's super fun & cute & makes packages a lot less boring.
07.12.16 - Send your zine out to be reviewed. Ok, I need your help with this one. Where are you sending your zine for reviews? I write a perzine about recovery & sobriety & bmx. I'm not sure where to send it.
07.13.16 - Zine trade day! Ask someone to trade zines with you. I just messaged a bunch of folks on various social media platforms asking to trade! If you want to trade zines, let me know!
07.14.16 - ValenZINE'S day! Write to @zinecrush or directly to your zine crush. My zine crush is that babe who writes RIP ROAST SHRED GNAR, the bmx zine. Luckily he also happens to be my babe. Score!
07.15.16 - Leave your zine in public for someone else to find. I used to love leaving my zine on the bus when I commuted to work via public transit. Since writing Life Without Booze: Reflections on Six Years Sober I've been leaving copies all over the place in hopes that they find the people who may need them.
07.16.16 - Send your zine to a distro for consideration. I need your help again! What distros should I submit my zine to?
07.17.16 - Review a zine online or write a review to publish in your zine. I actually have a zine review instagram account where i review some of the zines I read & enjoy. Follow it @zinereviews
07.18.16 - Order from a different zine distro than normal. I'm SO FAR BEHIND on zine reading that ordering new zines right now just wouldn't make sense. Although, I did order the new issue of Doris recently because it's Doris!
07.19.16 - Zine shop appreciation day! Check out my friend Marlee's shop Have Company that has a nice selection of zines as well as the Wooden Shoe in Philadelphia.
07.20.16 - Free zine day! Give away a copy of your zine. If you want a free copy of my newest zine email me today (firstname.lastname@example.org) with your address & I'll send you one. You just have to promise to write me a letter!
07.21.16 - International Zine Library Day - Visit your local zine library. I'm lucky enough to have a huge zine collection to visit every day! Maybe next year I'll have you over on IZLD to hang out?
07.22.16 - Send your zine to a zine library. My zines are in lots of zine libraries but it is now on its way to the Toronto Zine Library! If you have a zine library please let me know if you would like copies of Lady Teeth (I'm no longer making copies of Girl Swirl or Sub Rosa for zine libraries but I'm pretty sure you can read EVERY SINGLE ZINE I HAVE EVER WRITTEN including all the weird one-offs I made in my 20's, at the Barnard Zine Library!)
07.23.16 - Organize a zine event! Any size! Big or Small! I wasn't able to organize a zine event but I do keep track of the events I do including readings, tours & zine fests. You can see all that over here.
07.24.16 - Teach yourself a new skill. I'm at a loss here. I don't know what new skill I should learn? Any ideas?
07.25.16 - Make a one page zine. I'm slacking big time on this one. Can I give you an IOU? I promise to do it soon though.
07.26.16 - Teach a friend or family member about zines. I've been doing this for so long, I don't think I have any friends or family members who don't already know about zines. HOW COOL IS THAT!?
